2A Team of the Week: Dilley Wolves

Heading into this past week, Refugio had not lost a district game since October 9, 2015.

58 wins in a row.

But after dropping down from 3A Division II over the offseason, Dilley had hopes of dethroning the longtime South Texas 2A power.

“We’ve had this date circled since the UIL Realignment was put out,” Dilley head coach David Silva said. “We knew they lost a great senior class, [and] both teams had to get ready early in the season facing each other week one of district play.”

The game lived up to the billing.

With just 43 seconds remaining, Dilley running back Caleb Alejandro sliced through the Refugio defense for the go-ahead seven-yard touchdown. Linebacker Gunner McClain then sealed the 35-32 victory with an interception on the ensuing drive.

“Refugio didn’t lay down, and our kids played tough,” Silva said. “It was a hard-fought contest, and I was proud of our kids taking that last drive and taking it in for the score.”

The Wolves did all of their damage on the ground. Alejandro had 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns, McClain had 84 rushing yards, and Abel Trevino had 62 rushing yards and two more scores.

Defensively, Eliberto Lopez had two interceptions, including a pick-six, while safety Isaiah Kinsey and McClain came up with Dilley’s two other interceptions.

The win gives the Wolves the pole position in the race for the District 16-2A Division I title. They’ll look to keep the momentum going when they take on Premont on the road this Friday.
