Boerne Champion faced plenty of adversity in its district opener last Thursday. First, before the Chargers even took the field, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football had labeled them as 14-point underdogs to New Braunfels Canyon. That prediction seemed to be coming true as Canyon led 31-17 heading to the fourth quarter.
However, Champion didn’t give up.
First, Chargers quarterback Jordan Ballin proved to be too elusive for the Cougar defense, juking a couple of players on an eight-yard touchdown run. He would keep the momentum going on Champion’s next drive by finding a wide-open Sawyer Bolli in the end zone for an eight-yard score. That touchdown would tie the game up at 31.
Then after an interception by Bolli defensively, kicker Nathan Bell played hero. He nailed a 26-yard field goal to send Champion home with a memorable victory in its district opener.

In addition to their 1-0 record in district play, the Chargers are now 4-0 on the season, matching their win total from last year.
The Chargers also started 4-0 in 2021, but they haven’t been 5-0 since their undefeated regular season back in 2014. They’ll look to match that start this Friday when they travel to Buda Hays for their second district game.
