6A Team of the Week: Klein Collins Tigers

Klein Collins head coach Adrian Mitchell has to be feeling good about his team’s ability to perform in the clutch after this past Friday

For the third-straight year, Klein Collins found itself in a one-possession game with Magnolia.

With the Tigers trailing 35-28, Klein Collins quarterback Brylon Jefferson began to make magic happen. First, with six minutes to go, he broke free from a pile of bodies for a 31-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 35. Then with just over a minute to go, he found Tylan Penright down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown to give Klein Collins the 42-35 lead.

Magnolia wasn’t quite done. The Bulldogs drove all the way into the red zone and had a chance to tie the game on the final play. However, as Bulldog quarterback Chase Lowery tried to scramble, he was met by Klein Collins linebackers Aden Earl and Oliver Rodgers, who drove him out at the one yard line to preserve the Tiger victory.

“I was most impressed by our overall resilience. We were far from perfect offensively and defensively, but when we needed to make plays, we found a way,” Klein Collins head coach Adrian Mitchell said.  “That resilience showed us that, as a program, we can weather the storm and continue to fight.”

Jefferson finished with 100 passing yards and a touchdown, but the majority of Klein Collins’ damage was done on the ground. Damarcus Jones had 106 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Tyce Hudson carried the ball ten times for 64 yards and a score. Jefferson also had seven carries for 68 yards.

Defensively, Jayden Guillory had 11 tackles and a pick-six.

With the win, Klein Collins improves to 3-1, and, most importantly, 2-0 in District 15-6A play. Next up, the Tigers will host Klein Forest, and they’ll head into that game with no shortage of momentum.

“We are proud of our Tigers and excited about the potential of this team,” Mitchell said. “There is a lot of football ahead, and we are focused on getting better every week.”
