2A Team of the Week: Timpson Bears

One of the comebacks of the weekend belongs to the Timpson Bears. Entering the fourth quarter in their game against Joaquin, the Bears found themselves trailing 42-22.

Timpson’s squad doesn’t have an ounce of quit in it though. The Bears scored three touchdowns in the first six minutes of the final quarter to cut the lead to 49-44. Then with just over three minutes left, superstar running back JJ Garner broke free for an 85-yard house call that ended up being the difference in a 52-49 Bears victory.

“We have been battle tested all year with close games but coming back from 21 points down showed our kids’ resilience,” Timpson head coach Patrick Gandy said. “Every coach knows the ball has to bounce your way in outcomes like this and it did. The lights never got too bright for our guys and they executed when they needed to. This was a total team effort in all phases of the game.”

The Bear backfield brought plenty of bad news to the Joaquin defense. Garner had 215 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Braylon Parker threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns. LaJordan McCollister led the receiving corps with four catches for 69 yards.

Defensively, Mayson Harbison made his presence felt in the trenches with 13 tackles from his defensive tackle position. Londell Parker was just as menacing alongside him as he finished with 11 total tackles and four tackles for loss.

This performance was a big bounce-back win for the Bears after a heartbreaking 58-57 loss to Shelbyville the week before. They’re now 2-1 in district play.

However, the road ahead won’t get any easier as Timpson will host a talented Garrison team this Friday at 7:00.
