3A Team of the Week: Shallowater Mustangs
Bushland had been rolling to start the season. The Falcons finished non-district play 7-0 and were ranked as the number three team in 3A Division I.
That didn’t intimidate Shallowater one bit.
The Mustangs came galloping out of the gate, building a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Cooper Martin had an 82-yard touchdown run to open the scoring, He then found receiver Brody Rowin in the corner of the end zone for an 11-yard score before Rowin added another touchdown in the second quarter on a fumble recovery in the end zone.
Bushland responded with a touchdown to cut the deficit to seven at halftime. The Falcons then scored again in the fourth quarter, appearing to tie the game, but the Mustangs shot through the middle and blocked the extra point, keeping the score at 21-20.
That ended up being pivotal as the Mustangs held on for the one-point victory.
Shallowater is now 6-2, and, most importantly, 1-0 in district. The Mustangs will look to stay perfect this week when they travel to River Road on Friday at 7:00.
