Corpus Christi Miller head coach David McHugh walked away from the timeout thinking ‘Why not us?’
From the outside, there were plenty of reasons. The Buccaneers trailed 5A Flour Bluff 41-40 and had the ball at their own 42-yard line with just eight seconds left.
What transpired next can now be called the “Miller Miracle.”
Miller quarterback Jayden Herrera heaved the ball down the sideline toward Laythan Wilson, who soared above his defender, made the catch, and raced the rest of the way for a game-winning 58-yard touchdown as time expired.

It was the culmination of a monster night for the Miller offense. Herrera threw for 310 yards and two scores, and Wilson led the receiving corps with six catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns. The Bucs also took care of business on the ground with David Villarreal rushing for 206 yards and a touchdown.
Now, there appeared to be no need for late drama with Miller up 40-29 with less than five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. But after two quick Flour Bluff touchdowns, McHugh said his guys never blinked as they eventually secured the 46-41 victory.
“All night long I felt like our guys were resilient and responded well to adversity. Every time we got punched, we punched back,” McHugh said. “I’m so proud of our kids in believing in the vision and the message we preach everyday: control what you can and when your opportunity comes, it’s time to take action!”
The win was a perfect start to McHugh’s tenure after he came over from Bishop in the offseason to take over the program. It was also a statement victory for a hungry Miller team coming off an uncharacteristic 4-7 season in 2025.
The Buccaneers will look to keep that momentum rolling this upcoming Friday when they travel to face another 5A program, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial.
