Six-Man Team of the Week: Highland Hornets

Highland LogoWhen Highland opened up its season against Loraine last year, the Bulldogs walloped the Hornets 48-15. Loraine would go on to make a run all the way to the 1A Division II State Title Game.

Many were expecting a similar result this year with Loraine regarded as a 34-point favorite.

However, the Hornets weren’t having it as they ran away with a 72-48 victory.

Highland held Loraine to under 100 yards on the ground, while its own run game flourished. Cooper Bowen rushed for 261 yards and six touchdowns for the Hornets. Quarterback Braxton Smith added 112 yards and another touchdown through the air.

This game was tied at 20 early in the second quarter, but Highland blew the game open heading into halftime. Tylan Balthrop broke the tie with a 17-yard touchdown scamper, Bowen had 34 and 19-yard touchdown runs, and Smith found Bubba Byrne for a 31-yard score. Byrne also secured a safety for the Hornet defense.

Those scores gave Highland a 49-26 advantage at the interval and some breathing room it would maintain throughout the second half.

Next up for the Hornets, they will play host to Throckmorton in their first home game of the season.
