Week One 3A Team of the Week: Blanco
3A Team of the Week: Blanco Panthers
Blanco had the seemingly unenviable task of travelling to take on the defending 3A Division II state runner up Poth on Friday. The Pirates were ranked as the number five team in 3A Division II and were regarded as 21-point favorites over the Panthers.
Poth even jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead.
However, that didn’t deter Blanco quarterback Cameron Anderson. He had touchdown runs either side of halftime to cut the Poth lead to 17-13.
In the fourth quarter, Carson Smith scored a four-yard touchdown to give the Panthers their first lead of the night. Poth responded with a touchdown of its own, but yet again Anderson had an answer. He found Tyler Dixon for an eight-yard touchdown that ended up being the game-winning score in Blanco’s 27-23 victory over Poth.
Anderson finished with 72 yards and a touchdown through the air, while adding another 145 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Smith also had a big night with 107 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Blanco finished 8-5 a year ago and certainly got off to quite the start this season. Next up, the Panthers will take to the road again as they face Antonian Prep in their week two contest this Friday.
