Westfield gets by Spring

Spring vs Westfield was a top-ranked matchup on Friday night at Planet Ford Stadium. The Westfield defense kept the pressure on Spring quarterback Bishop Davenport the entire game and came away with a 31-21 victory.

Westfield opened the game with an INT returned for a score, and WR Da’John Palomo caught three touchdown passes.

#5 ranked Westfield improved to 5-0, while Spring (4-1) suffered its first loss of the year.

school mascotThe Mustangs made life miserable for Spring quarterback Bishop Davenport. On his fourth pass attempt, De’Marion Stamps stepped in front of the intended receiver and intercepted the pass, and returned it 67 yards for an early 7-0 Westfield lead.

Spring answered with Davenport’s 33-yard touchdown pass to WR Bralen Martin to tie the game at 7-7.

In the first quarter, Davenport lost a fumble that led to a 43-yard touchdown by Palomo for a 14-7 Westfield lead and was he was sacked on consecutive plays.

Westfield never trailed again.

Palomo caught touchdown passes of 32- and 44-yards in the second quarter for a 28-7 Mustang lead at halftime.

2nd Half Rally

Westfield forced two more sacks came on consecutive plays that resulted in a turnover on downs in the 2nd quarter. Ja’Quille Carr and Anthony Holmes each had two sacks, and Ray Jones and Brian Eashmond both had one sack each.

Spring LogoSpring mounted a rally with two touchdowns in the second half. RB Myron Carter threw a touchdown pass to Martin (six receptions, 101 yards) on a half-back pass in the 3rd quarter, and Davenport’s 12-yard dart to WR Joshua Lopez cut the lead to 28-21 with 9:05 left in the game.

Then Westfield K Jonathan Dimas converted a 34-yard field goal with less than a minute left to put the game out of reach. LB Kiemond Emilien’s picked off Davenport in the waning seconds to seal the victory for the Mustangs.

Westfield Remains Undefeated

Westfield finished with 323 yards and 15 first downs.

Mustangs QB Cardel Williams was 12-of-23 passing for 223 yards and three touchdowns. WR Travis Sims Jr. had six grabs for 105 yards.

Spring gained 396 yards of total offense and 22 first downs, but threw two INTs and lost a fumble, and Davenport was running for his life all night. Spring just couldn’t execute their game plan.

For the game, Davenport was sacked six times and he threw two interceptions. Davenport was 24-of-43 passing for 332 yards and two touchdowns.
