Westlake Destroys Del Valle, Looks Ahead To Playoff Path

Westlake continues to look like one of the best teams in Class 6A.

The Chaparrals continued their undefeated district streak, blanking Del Valle 77-0 on Friday and guaranteed the top seed in their division.

They have now won straight straight by a double digit margin and have claimed eight of their wins by 21 points or more.

After two quick touchdowns from running back Grady Bartlett (accomplishing 56 yards on only six carries) Westlake was off, putting up 262 rushing yards–their most since November 2023.

As always, the Westlake defense proved themselves as one of the best in the state. The unit has only allowed 10.6 points per game this season and didn’t let Dripping Springs so much as sniff the Grady bartlett. On that side of the ball, both Gavin Bellinghausen and Forrest Breyfogle picked off passes from an overwhelmed Cardinals offense.

Now, the Chaps are bound for the playoffs, but a contest happening simultaneously as their Dripping Springs blowout altered their postseason destiny. Austin High fended off Bowie 35-32 on Friday night at House Park, clinching a playoff berth in District 26-6A. Because Austin has a smaller enrollment than Westlake, the Chaps will compete in Division I this postseason, where they will have to go through Lake Travis, North Shore, Reagan, Duncanville, and many other powerhouses on the road to the state title. If Bowie had won, a school with a larger enrollment to Westlake, the Chaps would have been pushed into Division II, and would have had an easier path to the championship against teams with smaller enrollment.

Next week, in the regular season finale, Westlake will compete against Dripping Springs, a team with an identical win/loss record. A victory would clinch an outright district championship for the Chaps.
