How Will Cedar Hill Fare In The Post-Joey McGuire Era?

Cedar Hill is always in the running for a state title, but next year could be a different story. Joey McGuire will no longer be the head coach at Cedar Hill after amassing an impressive 141-42 record, nine district championships and three state titles in his 14 seasons there.

Prior to his arrival, Cedar Hill had not won a playoff game and it’s no doubt McGuire helped build that program into what it is today. Sure, the talent will be there once again but how will the Cedar Hill program look now with McGuire’s departure?

Some starters from this year’s team that loss to DeSoto in the state quarterfinals will be returning and looking to put Cedar Hill back on top of the Texas high school football summit, but will it be enough?

Key Losses

QB Avery Davis, WR Charleston Rambo, DE Deondre Carter

Notre Dame pledge Avery Davis was one of the best quarterback recruits in Texas and had Cedar Hill once again looking to contend for a state title, despite starting the season off with a 2-2 record. Davis’ awareness in the pocket and ability to tuck the ball and run made him one of the most dangerous signal callers.

He also had helped from some tremendous talent lining up at receiver in Charleston Rambo. Rambo finished with an outstanding 86 receptions, 1,585 yards and 25 touchdowns. Carter patrolled the edges on defense as the 6-foot-3 230-pound end accounted for 60 tackles and five sacks.

Key Returners

WR Josh Fleeks, RB Cameron Fleming, S Courtney Olgivie

One thing about Cedar Hill is that the talent that runs through that program is abundant year-in and year-out. Next year will be no different as offensively Cedar Hill will have two viable weapons returning on offense.

Fleeks was a first-team all-district selection this year after posting 663 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. In the backfield, Fleming will be the go to back now that Marquise Forman and Kaegun Williams will be graduating. Fleming rushed for 409 yards and six touchdowns.

On defense, first-team all-district selection Courtney Ogilvie will be patrolling opposing air attacks as he will be leading the Cedar Hill secondary.

The Verdict

The talent will be there once again, but it’s hard to speculate where Cedar Hill will fall in the playoff picture now that longtime head coach Joey McGuire is an assistant at Baylor University. No doubt they will once again be a top tier team and expect Cedar Hill to be in the playoffs, but when you lose a coach such as McGuire it could be a bit of a hit in their shot for another state title.
