Duncanville appeared in its first state quarterfinal since 2000 and finished with an impressive 11-3 record. Though perhaps the “underdog” in the all too familiar District 7-6A group, Duncanville would probably be able to finish first in many other districts.
Even though Duncanville had quite the run, they will be losing some talented players, especially on offense. However, there are several players including the quarterback that started for them in their playoff run that are returning that could see Duncanville competing into December once again.
Key Losses
QB Jaylin Nelson, WR Mackendrick Jackson, RB Tre Siggers
Duncanville had athleticism on the offensive side of the ball that helped them average 32 points in their final six games of the 2016 season. Tre Siggers came into his own towards the end of the season and accounted for 634 yards and nine touchdowns.
Mackendrick Jackson was quite the target downfield, averaging 26 yards per catch this year and was a frequent favorite of both quarterbacks, including Texas State commit Jaylin Nelson prior to his injury.
Key Returners
QB Trazon Connley, RB Keilon Elder, DT Terrance Newman
When senior signal caller Jaylin Nelson went down with an injury, Connley was able to come in and keep the offense afloat, if not make it slightly better. Connley showed poise as he helped lead Duncanville deep into the playoffs and head into the half tied with perennial powerhouse Allen.
Newman was a force in the trenches as the Duncanville defense had only allowed opposing teams to run for only 93 yards per game against them with Newman anchoring the d-line. Elder was also a crucial aspect of the run game as he accounted for 579 yards and six touchdowns and will undoubtedly see his production increase when he returns.
The Verdict
Duncanville may have slipped under the radar of many, but sharing the same district with Cedar Hill and DeSoto and to come out with an 8-2 record at the end of the regular season is a tremendous testimony to the strength of the Duncanville squad.
Could Duncanville make it four rounds deep into the playoffs again next year though? If Connley can expand on his presence in the pocket and the defense increase on their stamina which became a big factor in their loss against Allen, then Duncanville could once again find itself well into the playoffs come next year.
