This district is the home of a state finalist in The Woodlands, but they lose a lot from graduation. Meanwhile, Beaumont West Brook and Lufkin each bring back their own bits and pieces of talent from last year.
That said, I think The Woodlands finds a way to stay on top of this district. It may take them some time to get going, but any time you have a stout defense, it can make up for a lot. I like the Highlanders.

Well it would be hard for me to see Lufkin or West Brook being able to stave off The Woodlands even with the program losing 70 seniors from last year’s 15-1 state runner-up team. Coach Mark Schmid and company can always be expected to field a competitive team year-in and year-out.
West Brook will have a new head coach in town and It might be a daunting task for them to match their 11-2 record from last year and Lufkin will probably be chasing both West Brook and The Woodlands but do have an elite receiver in Malik Jackson that will hopefully once again find them averaging close to 50 points a game to keep the district race close. However, I’m going with The Woodlands to come out on top again.

District 12-6A is going to look much different in 2017. Kevin Flanigan’s time at Beaumont West Brook is a thing of the past, Lufkin loses district Offensive Player of the Year Kordell Rodgers, and The Woodlands are losing an incredible senior class after a historic 2016 season.
Despite the losses, all three should remain fairly formidable and compete for the top spot in 12-6A.
The questions looming are just how explosive can Lufkin’s offense be without Rodgers and can the defense get key stops, how does West Brook bounce back after losing its head coach and a imposing running back in Joel Denley, and does The Woodlands have enough to come close to replicating last season’s success? The latter appears to be the easiest to answer and despite the losses of Eric Schmid, a pair of top-notch wide receivers and much of the same on the defensive edges, The Woodlands return plenty of talent, which I expect to be enough to edge out Lufkin and West Brook for the district title.

The Woodlands is losing a truly special senior class, but I still like them to win this district. Names like Schmid, Purcell, Loane, and Casey will be missed, but there’s enough continuity on the defense to give hope. Lufkin and West Brook will be strong, and it’ll be a tough race, but I like the foundation of success that The Woodlands has built, and I think they’ll keep building on it.
