Wylie’s Keenum Comes Up Big For Texans Playoff Hope

Round Rock Hail Roof Inspection

Case Keenum’s last start was in January 2022.

Nearly two years later, no one expected the former Wylie standout and NFL journeyman would see the field this season. Yet, despite serving as the third-string quarterback for the Houston Texans for the majority of the season, Keenum was named starter this week with C.J. Stroud ruled out with concussion. Keeping the Texans hopes alive, Keenum completed 23 of 36 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown, and an interception against the Tennessee Titans in a 19-16 overtime victory.

Although C.J. Stroud is expected to return next week, Keenum did the most with his opportunity, proving why he continues to prove why he is a highly sought backup, even at 35 years old.

Nine years after his first start with the team that signed him as an undrafted free agent, Keenum engineered several late game drives, sending the game into overtime, where the Texans won on a field goal as time expired. He is the only quarterback in franchise history to start under three different coaches.

Born in Brownwood, Keenum competed for Wylie High School in Abilene. During his high school career, he passed for 6,783 yards for 48 touchdowns and rushed for 41 touchdowns and 2,000 yards for the Bulldogs in 42 starts. In 2004, Wylie claimed the Texas Class 3A Division I Championships over Cuero.

Currently, the Texans have a 55% chance of making the playoffs. More than likely, they must win out, with either Stroud or Keenum as shot caller.
