With the season both Lake Travis and Westlake had, it was only inevitable we would get another edition of the “Battle of the Lakes” in the postseason.
The rivalry, one of the best in the country, will continue for the 21st time in the state semi finals. The 6A Division I Region IV final will happen on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.
The Chaps took care of business against Buda Johnson 52-14, setting the tone by recovering a muffed opening kickoff deep in Johnson territory and eventually amassing a 38-7 lead by halftime. Brandon Clark, traditionally a defensive back for the Chaps, made his debut at running back, accommodating for several injuries in the backfield. He made the most of his time, scoring twice on runs of 51 and 13 yards in the first half.
The Cavs equalled their rivals performance with their own blowout, pounding San Antonio East Central 52-7. Although East Central claimed the 7-3 lead briefly, it was short lived, and the Hornets scoring stopped there. By halftime, LT had blown it open, leading by 38-7. Van Hopping scored on a remarkable 95 yard run in the second quarter, accounting for one of his three rushing scores in the game.
It will be the second straight time both teams meet in the playoffs, with the Chaps eking out a victory last year 21-14.
From 2008 to 2016, Lake Travis dominated the series, winning a dozen straight meetings, including the Class 6A state quarterfinal on their way to their sixth state championship. However, the last several years have favored Westlake; the Cavaliers haven’t won a game against the Chaps since 2019. Westlake is currently riding a five game winning streak against their rivals.
In their meeting in October, Westlake pulled out a close one, winning 28-16 due to a swing of 14 points resulting from numerous Lake Travis miscues. The game was the sole blemish on the Cavs 12-1 record. The Chaps also come into the contest with an identical record and haven’t lost since September.
