Yoakum Key Players and Storylines
Yoakum had played for state championships twice before in 1952 and 2016 but came up short both times. In 2025, the third time was the charm as the Bulldogs raced past Grandview 45-29.
The Bulldogs were run-heavy a year ago, but they lose star running back Germarquis Robinson to Malakoff.
The Bulldogs lost plenty more to graduation especially offensively where receiver Keenan Dilworth is the lone returning starter on that side of the ball.
Defensively, Yoakum will need linebacker Isiah Lopez (76 tackles, 7.5 TFLs) to lead the way in the middle of the field, while defensive tackle Joaquin Varela (69 tackles, 10 TFLs) will anchor the unit in the trenches. At cornerback, Elyjai Barnett (55 tackles, two INTs) has impressive bloodlines as the younger brother of SMU signee X’Zavier Barnett. He’ll be a key player for the Bulldogs in the secondary this season.
Yoakum won’t be as talented right away this year after losing so much production to graduation. Still, this is a program that has won at least one playoff game in seven of its 11 seasons under head coach Bo Robinson. With that tradition, expectations will remain high for the Bulldogs this fall.
