Amarillo River Road Hires Bryan Welps As New Head Coach

A familiar face is returning to the Texas Panhandle. Brownfield head coach Bryan Welps was officially named the new head coach at Amarillo River Road by River Road ISD in a special board meeting on Wednesday morning. The move was first reported by Lance Lahnert on Tuesday.

Welps leaves Brownfield after compiling a 28-37 record in six seasons with the Cubs, who made the playoffs in four of his six years there.

As he returns to his old job, he replaces Phillip Wiggins who announced his resignation who spent four seasons at River Road and took the Wildcats back to the playoffs in 2015 and last season in 2016.

This will be the second stint as the head coach of the Wildcats for Welps. He coached the team from 2005-2009 with his best season coming in 2009, leading River Road to the 2A state quarterfinals that year.

In a news conference following the hire, Welps told reporters that River Road is “a great place to come back to.
