HUMBLE, Texas- College Station found themselves in a shootout with Port Neches-Groves on Saturday afternoon in Humble. But thanks to three forced turnovers by the Cougars, they were able to pull away from the Indians for a 66-40 win.
College Station dominated the first half striking first with a DaDa Anderson 56-yard rush. He would fill the stat sheet give on the afternoon, finishing with two more touchdowns and 232 yards on just 17 touches.
An interception on the ensuing Indians drive led to another Cougars touchdown.
Port Neches-Groves finally got on the board with the first play of the second quarter, capping off a 1:59 drive with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Roschon Johnson to Preston Riggs.
Meanwhile, the Cougars would go on to score two more times, as the combo of Anderson and Perez combined for five first half touchdowns, and they added a field goal as the half came to a close. The Indians scored once more in the last two minutes of the half for a halftime score of 38-14.
Port Neches-Groves opened the second half with a touchdown to bring the game within 18 points. But the Indians’ defense continued to struggle as Anderson had runs of 30 and 33 for College Station’s seventh straight scoring drive to increase their lead 45-20.
Roschon Johnson did his best to keep the Indians in the game, but the Cougars were able to make the big plays as needed in the as Joseph came up with his second interception of the game at the end of third quarter to halt a potential momentum-changing drive.
he Cougars capitalized as Marquez Perez scored on an 86-yard quarterback keeper. At the end of the third, College Station was taking Port Neches-Groves for a ride, up 52-20. It was enough to put the Indians away even with a late charge.
Roschon Johnson and the Indians head home after an impressive 10-2 season. Johnson, just a junior combined for five or more touchdowns in all but one game this season. The Texas commit finished with 29 rushes for 209 yards and was 16 for 35 for 166 yards through the air.
Coach Steve Huff was complimentary to Johnson, but credited his defense from preventing him from taking over the game.
“He’s a D1 prospect andagainst him it’s not about shutting him down, it’s bend not break with him,” College Station head coach said.
The Cougars advances to play Fort Bend Marshall next week, “We saw them last year, they were missing some guys. This year, they’re fully healthy, but we’ll be ready.”
