The Aledo Bearcats have dominated the state in class 5A this decade with their 8th appearance, and capped it off with their 9th state title in school history.
Led by senior QB Jake Bishop, Aledo battled Fort Bend Marshall to the very end in a 45-42 victory. Bishop took home the offensive MVP as he went 11-16 for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns in the air and added another touchdown on the ground with his legs. All through 3 quarters of play.
RB Jase McClellan, who made national news Wednesday by switching his commitment and signing with Alabama, had 186 yards on the ground in 21 carries, and added a touchdown on his 63 yard run early in the 3rd quarter.
McClellan helped the Bearcats control time of possession, and it proved to be the difference as he kept the ball away from FB Marshall’s dual threat backfield of Malik Hornsby and Aggie commit RB Devon Achane.
Achane added a key catch out of the backfield late in the 4th quarter that set up Hornsby’s touchdown pass that brought the game within a score of pulling off the upset.
Through 3 quarters of play, Achane had accounted for 158 yards rushing, 88 yards passing and a score.
Fort Bend Marshall’s late attempt to complete the comeback fell just short as Aledo got its record 9th state title and 8th this decade.
Achane finished his final game with 171 yards rushing and 2 rushing touchdowns while adding another 121 receiving yards. The 2020 grad has committed to the in-state Aggies and will certainly bring a lift to their RB core group.
McClellan finished the game with 218 yards rushing and 2 rushing touchdowns. While Bishop finished with 244 yards in the air, and 46 on the ground for 290 total yards.
