Two of the top 10 teams in the state face off this week in Denton, Texas. Denton Ryan, our #10 team in our Top 25 state rankings (CLICK HERE for the Rankings), hosts the #4 team in the state, Denton Guyer. This should be a great game.
Both teams are coming off of season opener wins. Denton Guyer beat Lewisville, 56-33 and Denton Ryan beat Arlington Martin 47-24. Ryan faced the tougher week one opponent and with their 23 point win climbed our rankings. Guyer is a team that all rankings have in the top 5 in the state.
The Denton Ryan Raiders, and Head Coach Dave Henigan, have gone 29-2 over the past two seasons. They were our favorites to win the state title last year, but fell just short. They have a phenomenal offense, led by Quarterback Seth Henigan, who threw for 37 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards last year. He has two great weapons on offense, both Texas Longhorn commits, Billy Bowman, Jr. and Ja’Tavion Sanders. The defense is stacked with talent too. With a win this week, the Raiders would likely jump all the way into our top 5 in the state.
Denton Guyer is coming off of a 14-2 season in which they reached the state championship last year. They’re looking to get back to it and claim their school’s third state title. Our Senior Writer, Adam Ogburn, wrote a season preview about the Wildcats: CLICK HERE
The Wildcats have a first year Head Coach, Rodney Webb from Rockwall. They are led by one of the best QB’s in the state, the Texas A&M commit, Eli Stowers. Stowers is coming off a year in which he threw for just under 3,000 years and 36 touchdowns. I added over 1,000 yards on the ground and another 11 touchdowns. The team is full of players that already have D1 offers. If they can beat Denton Ryan, they’ll be in consideration for the best team in the state.
