5 Thoughts On This Week’s Thursday Night Texas High School Football Games

1. Plano East finally wins in a rout – The Panthers have struggled a tad this season with consistency, and were steamrolled last week by Denton Guyer, 34-6. What better way to come back than to completely dominate next week’s opponent? East crushed McKinney Boyd 61-0, good for the best result the school has had in a long time. The Panthers still have a little ways to go to be competitive in as talented a district as they’re in, but a 61-0 win is a great start, and a definite confidence builder for a talented team.

2. Cedar Hill stomps – After hearing so much about their struggles to start strong in games, Cedar Hill came out and flat out obliterated their opponents by a score of 58-0. Now, this doesn’t mean that Cedar Hill is back without a shadow of a doubt, but beating teams that you should beat by a considerable amount of points will never be a bad thing. Cedar Hill has had one of the most difficult schedules in the state so far, and it’ll pay dividends down the line.

3. Game of the Night: Burleson Centennial over Seguin, 31-27 – Centennial broke up a pass with four seconds left on fourth and 15 to seal a dramatic win over Seguin.

The last drive featured multiple 4th downs and heroics on both sides of the ball. The games last night appeared to be either really close or huge blowouts, and Centennial-Seguin might’ve been the closest of the bunch.

4. I’m not sure I agree with the decision to extend the Hirschi-Sanger game – Hirschi and Sanger were barely into the second quarter when their game was postponed. Normally, they’d resume play in around 24 hours or so, but there was a call made to extend the game until Saturday.

If there’s a record for the longest High School game of all time, this one might break it. This game will technically last for over 48 hours.

I know that the visitors get to pick the timing, but stretching it out this long just seems like a jerk move. Two entire days will have passed without a victor, that just doesn’t seem right.

5. Almost no average games in sight – Thursday was rough for the losers, you either got blown out or you got beat at the last second. We’ve already talked about some of the close games, but Richland beating Polytechnic by a score of 78-0 deserves some recognition too. There didn’t seem to be nearly any “average” scores out there, just mushroom cloud blowouts and nailbiting close ones.
