Big changes are coming to one of Texas’ most dominant small-school football programs. After 18 incredible seasons at the helm, Jake Fieszel is stepping down as Gunter’s head coach.
As first reported by Jason Della Rosa for The Herald Democrat, Fieszel is leaving for personal reasons after building a dynasty that most programs could only dream of. His run included a jaw-dropping 224-31 record, five Class 3A Division II state championships, two runner-up finishes, and nine trips to the state semifinals. Oh, and let’s not forget—he just wrapped up a three-peat with Gunter’s latest state title.
Fieszel didn’t just win games. He built a powerhouse culture that turned Gunter into a regular December visitor at AT&T Stadium. His teams were tough, disciplined, and always ready for the big moments.
It’s not every day that a coach with a career winning percentage of over 87% walks away, so this marks the end of an era not just for Gunter, but for Texas high school football. Whoever takes over next will have giant shoes to fill.
