Longview dominated District 10-6A last year and advanced all the way to the state semifinals.
However, the Lobos graduated over half of their starters from a year ago and have some holes to fill heading into the season.
Will that open the door for someone else? Here’s what to watch for in District 10-6A.
Forney Jackrabbits
Head Coach: Jeff Fleener (5th season; 32-16 record)
Last Season: 5-6; 3-3 in district (Lost to Wylie East in bi-district)
Forney Key Players and Storylines
Forney proved it belonged in 6A in its first season playing in the biggest classification in Texas. The Jackrabbits made the playoffs and gave District 9-6A champion Wylie East a run for its money in the bi-district round.
Now, the Jackrabbits will look to make another jump in 2025 as they search the playoff runs they consistently made in 5A.
Their offense will be as relentless as the Energizer Bunny. Dual threat quarterback Nelson Peterson Jr. (2,154 passing yards, 661 rushing yards, and 30 total TDs) and Notre Dame commit running back Javian Osborne (1,085 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns) are a dangerous backfield tandem. Wide receiver Imari Jehiel (616 receiving yards and seven touchdowns), a Texas Tech commit, is a big play threat in the passing attack.
However, defenses can’t just zero in on him due to fellow receiver Preston Jackson (368 receiving yards and six touchdowns). Both he and Jehiel were second team all-district picks in 2024.
Junior tackle Jordan Carraway will anchor Peterson’s protection. He’s a mountain of a lineman at 6’5″ and 320 pounds.
On the other side of the ball, linebackers Landry Hopkins (74 tackles) and Xzavier Young (58 tackles) return after strong 2024 campaigns. Defensive tackle Preston Boma (46 tackles, 7.5 TFLs) is a menace in the trenches. He was a second team all-district pick last season.
Last year, Forney averaged an impressive 38 points per game. That offense should be just as dangerous this season as the Jackrabbits head in 2025 with high hopes for a promising campaign.
Longview Lobos
Head Coach: John King (22nd season; 235-49 record)
Last Season: 12-3; 6-0 in district (Lost to Southlake Carroll in state semifinals)
Returning Lettermen: 35; (3 returning starters on offense; 6 on defense)
Longview Key Players and Storylines
The Lobos came close to a return to the state championship game last season, but they fell just short to Southlake Carroll in the state semifinals on a walk-off field goal.
As the Lobos look to play December football again this year, head coach John King and company will have some holes to fill.
Gone is 2,500-yard rusher Kelvin Washington. Now, it’ll be up to senior Javion Pereria and fullback Mason Washington to take on the load out of the backfield this season. They will have some help from junior quarterback Johnny Hamilton in the passing game. He took over the last four games of last season and was an integral part of Longview’s semifinal run.
He’s got a star-in-the-making to target with sophomore receiver Jaden Hurndon. He’s already starting to get looks at the Power Five level.
Defensively, Krystin Williams should enforce his will on the defensive line with his 5-foot-11, 315-pound frame. Jessier Hampton Williams will be a reliable presence at linebacker.
Safety Da’Kayden Carter is Longview’s leading returning tackler from last season. He and fellow safety Robert White should make a formidable pairing on the backend.
This year won’t come as easy for Longview with the roster turnover it is dealing with. However, never overlook these Lobos with their 24-straight playoff appearances and eight-straight years of playoff victories.
North Forney Falcons
Head Coach: Marcus Shavers (2nd season; 8-4 record)
Last Season: 8-4; 5-1 in district (Lost to Waxahachie in area round)
North Forney Key Players and Storylines
North Forney got after it last season, averaging 34.5 points per game. The scary thing for its opponents? Basically all of its key weapons are back offensively this year.
It all starts with dual threat quarterback Legend Bey, who put up video game numbers on the ground for a quarterback. He finished the season with 1,912 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns to go along with his 1,444 passing yards and 13 touchdowns through the air.
He’s got his favorite target back in Wake Forest commit receiver Elijah Otieno (811 receiving yards and nine touchdowns), while promising junior Briceson Thrower joins the receivers room after moving in from Kansas. 2024 first team all-district running back Andikan Asuquo (816 rushing yards and six touchdowns) will help shoulder the load in the rushing attack.
The Falcons did graduate three all-district offensive linemen, but 6’6″, 285-pound tackle Marcus Page Jr. will anchor the protection in the trenches. He’s a convert from basketball and committed to Baylor over the summer.
Opposing quarterbacks will have to be weary of SMU commit cornerback Ryan Gilbert (44 tackles) and Missouri State commit cornerback Josiah Turner (71 tackles) in the secondary. J’Ynv Williams (72 tackles, 14 TFLs) was a frequent visitor to opponents’ backfields last season. He’s beginning to attract Division I interest as well.
The Falcons have only advanced past the second round of playoffs once in their school history. With Bey leading the way and both sides of the ball stacked with next-level talent, they could be a threat to make some noise come November.
Rockwall Yellowjackets
Head Coach: Trey Brooks (6th season; 46-15 record)
Last Season: 6-6; 3-3 in district (Lost to Duncanville in area round)
Returning Lettermen: 36 (3 returning starters on offense; 4 on defense)
Rockwall Key Players and Storylines
Not only has Rockwall made the playoffs the past 12 years, the Yellowjackets have also won at least one playoff game in each of those seasons.
So they have a steady foundation to work with despite the return of just seven starters from last year’s team.
The presence of starting quarterback Brent Rickert provides the offense with a sturdy leader. He’s a “great decision maker,” and threw for 2,650 yards and 39 touchdowns last season.
Head coach Trey Brooks said the Jackets have a lot of depth at the skill positions. They also have plenty of versatility. Stanford commit Jack Duckworth (472 receiving yards and five touchdowns) can play at both receiver and cornerback, while Jackson Stoner will bring his physicality to both his tight end and defensive end roles.
Now, Rockwall will be settling in some new faces on the defensive line around Stoner, but there’s plenty of talent behind them.
Safety Will Ashworth (104 tackles) was Rockwall’s leading tackler last year and cornerback Zaidun Edwards (28 tackles, two INTs) can line up in multiple positions on the field. Linebacker JaiChristian Washington (47 tackles, six TFLs) is a “fast and physical” threat in the middle of the field.
Last year, Rockwall wound up third in District 10-6A. It was the first time under Brooks that the Yellowjackets hadn’t finished in the top in the district standings. They’ll look to be back in the mix for a district title this year as they search for a playoff win for the 13th straight season.
Rockwall-Heath Hawks
Head Coach: Rodney Webb (3rd season; 13-9 record)
Last Season: 4-6; 2-4 record
Returning Lettermen: 32 (8 returning starters on offense; 9 on defense)
Rockwall-Heath Key Players and Storylines
The Hawks will be determined to come back soaring in 2025 after missing the playoffs for the first time in five years last season.
They do have much of that group back from last fall with 17 returning starters, including a number of weapons offensively.
Junior Carter Zahm will be a threat at both running back and wide receiver, and senior Shawn Gary (586 receiving yards and six TDs) led the Hawks in receiving yards a year ago. They’ll also have dual threat quarterback Prosper Neal (1,047 passing yards and 14 TDs; 321 rushing yards and 3 TDs) back to conduct the offense.
Marcus Saavedra will anchor the offensive line. Head coach Rodney Webb said he’s “extremely athletic for a 270-pound guy.”
On the other side of the ball, Zeke Cannon will be the leader of the Hawk defense. He’s a three-year starter at linebacker.
Alongside him, outside linebacker Landon Foster (36 tackles, 10 TFLs) will be a weapon off the edge. Safety Dylan McCann (55 tackles) will patrol the back end with his athleticism.
Before last season, the Hawks had won at least one playoff game the prior four years. That will be the expectation this year with plenty of experience and leadership on this Rockwall-Heath roster.
Royse City Bulldogs
Head Coach: Andrew Colvin (2nd season; 2-8 record)
Last Season: 2-8; 0-6 in district
Returning Starters: 6 on offense/4 on defense
Royse City Key Players and Storylines
Royse City heads into year two under Andrew Colvin looking to improve after finishing winless in district play in 2024.
They return just under half their starters, including quarterback Jamion Richardson (1,125 passing yards and 12 TDs). He’s a dual threat (298 rushing yards and five TDs), and Colvin believes he’ll take a step forward with last year’s experience under his belt.
Tight end Hudson Hays (113 receiving yards) can “block and catch well.” Sophomore receiver Bryson Arney is poised to burst onto the scene this year. Colvin noted his uncle was a standout for the Bulldogs back in the early 2000s.
On the offensive line, senior right guard Isaac Martin will “bring a lot of leadership” to the trenches.
Defensive tackle Caden Williams (58 tackles, seven TFLs) is “quick off the ball” and should be a force on the defensive line. Behind him, linebacker Kyran Reyes can “hit with the best of them,” while safety John Abrama has the range to shut down anything over the top against the Bulldog defense.
After a down year last fall, Colvin is keeping the goals for this year’s team simple. He wants the Bulldogs back in the playoffs for the fifth time in the past seven seasons.
Tyler Legacy Raiders
Head Coach: Beau Trahan (3rd season; 6-15 record)
Last Season: 3-7; 2-4 in district
Returning Lettermen: 34 (6 returning starters on offense; 6 on defense)
Tyler Legacy Key Players and Storylines
The Raiders return just over half their starters from a year ago as they look to improve on a fifth place district finish in 2024.
Quarterback Zach Davis is back after throwing for over 2,100 yards a year ago. He’s “smart with great arm talent.” He’ll be well protected too. DeMarrion Johnson (6’6″, 315 pounds) and Eric Miller (6’2″ and 320 pounds) bring plenty of size and strength to the offensive line.
Nickel Ethan Brown (105 tackles, two INTs) is the Raiders’ leading returning tackler. Not only is he explosive, he’s got great ball skills as well. Linebacker Jacob Harris (90 tackles) is a “thumper” in the middle of the field, while nose guard Luke Allen (31 tackles) will anchor the Tyler Legacy defensive line.
The Raiders have a great foundation in the trenches in both sides of the ball. With that being said, their coaching staff believes if they can be the more physical team on the field each Friday night, everything else will take care of itself.
