Former Weimar Coach Set to Lead Mason Punchers

Austin Roof Inspection

Mason High School is making a move. On Monday, the district officially named Wade Griffin its next head football coach and athletic director, pending board approval.

Griffin comes over from Weimar, where he led the Wildcats to a solid 21–14 record over three seasons. Ironically, his 2023 season ended with a second-round playoff loss against Mason. Now, he’ll be coaching the Punchers.

He replaces Mason alum Michael McLeod, who posted an impressive 58–16 record but is headed to Llano as a defensive coordinator. While McLeod never claimed a state title, he kept Mason’s athletic department thriving, picking up Lone Star Cups and making deep postseason runs across multiple sports.

For Griffin, the move is about more than football. “Mason has a culture of high achievers,” he said. “They’re good at everything. The support here is unmatched.”

Griffin brings 15 seasons of head coaching experience and a 103–70 career record with stops at Elgin, Giddings, Brewer, and more. His wife, also a coach, will join the Mason staff on the girls’ side. With summer just around the corner, Griffin is eager to hit the ground running and start building relationships.
