Texas HS Connection: Week Six’s Top College Players

Austin Roof Inspection

It was a busy week for former Texas high school stars at the college level. From clutch game-winning touchdowns to backups stepping up when their number was called, there were no shortage of standouts this week.

Here are the top former Texas high school football players from week six of college football.

Alabama State QB Andrew Body (Miller) and RB Jahbari Kuykendall (Westside)

Alabama State’s Lone Star State backfield delivered on Saturday in a 52-35 win over Bethune-Cookman. Hornet quarterback Andrew Body, a Corpus Christi Miller grad, threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 95 yards on the ground.

Former Westside running back Jahbari Kuykendall only touched the ball eight times, but he rushed for 106 yards, good for over 13 yards per carry. His biggest highlight came on a 48-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Before this week, Kuykendall had just 55 rushing yards on the season. He may be listed as Alabama State’s third string running back, but this was a breakout game for him.

He and Body will look to keep that offense flying when they face Jackson State this Saturday in a battle of 4-1 teams.

Clemson QB Cade Klubnik (Westlake)

It has been a rocky season at best for the Clemson Tigers. But on Saturday against North Carolina, Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik was dialed in. He completed 22 of his 24 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers roared past North Carolina 38-10.

That 91.6% completion percentage was a career high for Klubnik. It was also his first four-touchdown performance of the season. In his four previous games, he had just six total passing touchdowns.

Clemson is now 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in the ACC. The Tigers will now look to notch back-to-back wins for the first time this season on Saturday at Boston College.

Florida QB D.J. Lagway (Willis)

D.J. Lagway heard a lot of noise about his struggles to open the season for Florida. He threw five interceptions in the Gators’ loss to LSU and finished with just 61 passing yards against Miami.

This Saturday, the former Willis Wildkat looked like a brand new player. He threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns as the Gators stunned #9 Texas 29-21. Both of those touchdowns were to freshman Dallas Wilson, who was making his college debut.

“It’s awesome. It’s a blessing. Anytime you can get a win against a top ten team, especially a SEC opponent, it’s great,” Lagway said. “Especially letting it be Texas, I know a lot of guys on the team, so I’ve got bragging rights. But it’s just great to go out there and compete against guys I competed against in high school.”

Lagway will get another go at a Lone Star State team this week as the Gators hit the road to face Texas A&M on Saturday at 6:00.

Memphis QB Brendon Lewis (Melissa)

Don’t look now, but the Memphis Tigers are 6-0. This past Saturday, they launched Tulsa into the sun 45-7. Former Melissa Cardinal Brendon Lewis was making things happen for the Tigers. Not only did he throw for 266 yards and three touchdowns, he also led the Tigers with 67 rushing yards and another score.

This is Lewis’ first year playing at Memphis. He spent his first three years at Colorado before transferring to Nevada for the past two seasons.

He now has four total touchdowns in back-to-back games. Memphis’ 6-0 start is its best in 10 years. Lewis and his teammates will get a week of rest now on their bye before facing UAB on the road on October 18.

Georgetown QB Dez Thomas II (Vista Ridge)

The play of the college football weekend arguably belongs to Vista Ridge’s Dez Thomas II.

His Georgetown Hoyas were trailing 24-21 with just a couple seconds remaining with the ball at the Morgan State 49 yard line. Their only option? A prayer and a Hail Mary.

Thomas heaved it up and his receiver Jimmy Kibble went over the top of a Morgan State defender to catch the improbable game-winning touchdown as time expired.

Thomas finished the 27-24 victory with 211 passing yards, three touchdowns and a play he’ll never forget. Georgetown is now 3-3 on the season. The Hoyas are on a bye this week before returning to Patriot League play against Colgate on October 18.

South Dakota State RB Julius Loughridge (Mayde Creek)

Former Mayde Creek running back Julius Loughridge was certainly ram tough on Saturday. He had a bell cow performance with 25 carries for 176 yards and four touchdowns.

South Dakota State needed every single one of those scores too as they held off Youngstown State 35-30.

It was a career high in rushing touchdowns for Loughridge and his second most rushing yards in a single game. He had 211 yards against Holy Cross back when he was with Fordham in 2023.

With the win, the Jackrabbits are now 5-0 on the season. They will return home this weekend looking to stay undefeated against Northern Iowa.

Texas A&M RB Rueben Owens (El Campo)

Rueben Owens missed almost the entire 2024 season with a foot injury.

On Saturday night, his moment finally arrived against Mississippi State. With Texas A&M’s starting running back Le’Veon Moss banged up, the Aggies fed Owens 21 times. He rewarded them with 142 rushing yards, a collegiate career high.

He didn’t find the end zone, but he helped the Aggies’ offense move up and down the field in their 31-9 win.

“You never want no one to go down, but the next man has got to be up. There can’t be fall off. It’s got to be the same thing,” Owens said. “I’m just glad I got the opportunity to show what I got.”

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko said Moss should be fine moving forward, so the Aggies have themselves quite the 1-2 punch at running back now. They’ll look to keep that ground game churning with a home date against Florida this Saturday.

Texas Tech RB J’Koby Williams (Beckville) and WR Caleb Douglas (Fort Bend Hightower)

Texas Tech’s offense was firing on all cylinders against Houston this past Saturday. The Red Raiders finished with 552 total yards in their 35-11 win over the Cougars.

Their skill players were on it. Former Beckville running back J’Koby Williams had 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns. It was the first time he had multiple touchdowns on the ground in a game and also the second most rushing yards he’s had in a contest.

In the passing attack, Caleb Douglas was a busy man. He paced the Red Raiders with seven catches for 114 yards. It was the first time he’s passed the century mark this year.

Texas Tech is now 5-0 and ranked ninth in the newest AP poll. The Red Raiders will aim to keep this hot start going this Saturday with a home game against Kansas.

Lamar WR Kyndon Fuselier (Nederland)

Kyndon Fuselier had one of the clutch plays of the weekend in college football. With Lamar and Nichols State tied at 17 and just over three minutes remaining, Fuselier returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown for what ended up being the game-winning touchdown. He made five Nichols State defenders miss after the initial catch before flashing his speed the rest of the way.

For his efforts, he was named the FCS’ National Special Teams Player of the Week. After the 24-17 victory, Lamar is now 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in the Southland. The Cardinals will now prepare for a trip to Commerce to face East Texas A&M this weekend.
