Cade Klubnik’s football career has been tied to expectations for years. From Austin Westlake to Clemson, he was viewed as a future star and, at one point, a likely high first-round NFL Draft pick. Instead, the former Texas high school legend now arrives with the New York Jets after sliding lower than many once projected. That may say more about draft timing than talent.

At Westlake, Klubnik built one of the best quarterback resumes in modern Texas history. He led the Chaparrals to three consecutive state championships and finished 43-2 as a starter. He threw for more than 7,400 career passing yards, accounted for over 100 total touchdowns, and consistently elevated one of the state’s premier programs. He was named the 2021 MaxPreps National Player of the Year and the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year.

His senior season was dominant. Klubnik passed for 3,495 yards and 35 touchdowns while rushing for 639 yards and 15 more scores. In the state title game against Denton Guyer, he threw for 220 yards, rushed for 97 yards, and accounted for four touchdowns in a 40-21 win. He regularly saved his best football for the biggest stage.

Clemson saw enough to move quickly. Klubnik replaced the starting quarterback earlier than many expected and became the face of the Tigers’ next era. That decision reflected how highly the program valued his talent, leadership, and ability to create offense when structure broke down.

Early flashes were real. In the 2022 ACC Championship Game, Klubnik sparked Clemson to a 39-10 win over North Carolina by throwing for 279 yards and one touchdown while rushing for another score. He followed with a strong Orange Bowl performance against Tennessee, showing mobility and competitiveness despite heavy pressure.

Expectations only grew from there. Clemson entered multiple seasons believing it could contend for the College Football Playoff, but those teams often failed to reach the standard built during the program’s peak years. Klubnik, fairly or not, carried much of that public pressure as the starting quarterback.

His college production was still strong. Klubnik finished his Clemson career with more than 8,500 passing yards, over 65 passing touchdowns, and added more than 1,000 rushing yards with double-digit rushing scores. He completed a high percentage of passes and showed consistent toughness, starting through injuries and absorbing criticism.

His senior season, however, became the key draft discussion. There were excellent moments, including multiple 300-yard passing games, late-game drives, and wins over ranked opponents. There were also uneven stretches, turnover issues, and games where Clemson’s offense stalled at the wrong time. In a quarterback class judged closely, that inconsistency likely cost him draft position.

Had his final season matched his peak projection, Klubnik may have gone much earlier. Instead, the Jets may have landed a quarterback with first-round tools at a discount. He still brings mobility, arm talent, processing ability, and years of starting experience in high-pressure games.

New York also presents opportunity. The Jets’ quarterback room is not locked down long term, and strong preseason play can quickly change plans. Klubnik has shown throughout his career that when stakes rise, he often responds.

Texas fans know exactly what kind of player this is. A proven winner, a decorated quarterback, and a player whose draft slot may end up lower than his NFL value.
