McKinney Boyd Key Players and Storylines
McKinney Boyd had its fair share of struggles in Stu Johnson’s first year in 2025, but the Broncos have some room for optimism. A strong junior class is set to propel this year’s team forward after gaining experience last fall.
It all starts with junior quarterback Major Smith (963 passing yards, nine touchdowns), who the Bronco coaching staff believes “is the future of the program.” Fellow junior tight end/receiver Timothy Karsholt (800 total yards, ten touchdowns) is a playmaker all over the field, while running back Kaiden Washington is ready to take on the bell cow role this year.

In front of them, 5’9”, 290-pound senior Dean Baumann is a multi-year starter on the offensive line, while 6’0”, 260-pound junior Corby Strange impressed as a starter a year ago.
Defensively, the Broncos return a number of their key players. Linebacker Ugo Anosike (68 tackles, 12 TFLs) earned first team all-district honors last season, while defensive back Kahlen Gunter (86 tackles, one INT) is “a big hitter” and Boyd’s leading returning tackler.
Karsholt (47 tackles) will play some at linebacker too alongside promising sophomore Brennan Jones (12 tackles). Nose guard Chaston Stephens (37 tackles, four sacks) is a three-year starter and Boyd’s leader in the trenches.
The Bronco coaching staff admits just seven total wins across the past four seasons present some psychological challenges, but still, there’s no shortage of excitement in Bronco country. Boyd’s “best players are back” and that experience will be crucial in a tough District 6-6A.
