South Oak Cliff Key Players and Storylines
South Oak Cliff got its revenge last season. After falling to Richmond Randle in the 2024 5A Division II State Title Game, the Golden Bears won their rematch in 2025 with a 35-19 victory. It was their third state title, and fifth-straight state title game appearance.
The Golden Bears did graduate the majority of their offensive skill talent, but their leader, SFA commit quarterback Jayden Williams (2,602 passing yards and 26 touchdowns), returns to lead the unit. He’ll be well protected with 6’5″, 315-pound Texas commit tackle Brian Swanson and 6’2″, 300-pound Lamar commit guard Zion Ragster. In the passing attack, Williams will have a big target to aim for in 6’4″, 220-pound tight end Brenden Freeney.

Defensively, South Oak Cliff gave up just 16.1 points per game last season, and the Golden Bears will expect to be stingy again this season. It starts from the back with playmaking safeties Isaiah Udom (64 tackles and five INTs) and Jyrion Hampton (59 tackles). In the front seven, linebacker Cody Smith (100 tackles, 12 TFLs) had a monster sophomore season and is the team’s leading returning tackler.
Up front, the Golden Bears are going to be a force in the interior with California commit defensive tackle Jaderian Jones (75 tackles, 21 TFLs) and 6’2″, 287-pound senior defensive tackle Phirrell Spencer (74 tackles, 11 TFLs). They also added 6’4″, 280-pound junior defensive tackle Jayln Smith from Everman over the offseason.
South Oak Cliff’s trademark defense is going to be strong again this season. If they can find the weapons that Williams needs offensively, a sixth-straight state title game appearance will be well within reach.
