6A Team of the Week: Southlake Carroll Dragons
It was one of the most anticipated matchups of the opening week of high school football. A Red River rivalry. Oklahoma powerhouse Jenks against Texas powerhouse Southlake Carroll at the iconic Cotton Bowl.
And after a quarter and a half, it looked like it was over. Jenks led 27-0. The Sooner State was ready to claim its bragging rights.
But Southlake Carroll and first-year head coach Lee Munn weren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
“I told a few of the kids it’s like eating an elephant….one bite at a time,” Munn said. “We had talked to the team all week about being process oriented and not looking at the scoreboard, so the coaching staff just reminded them of our messaging that we had had all week.”
By halftime, it was 27-14 after two Southlake Carroll passing touchdowns. Out of the break, the Dragons just kept chipping away. Quarterback Hudson Tomcheck added a rushing touchdown before finding his receiver Brody Knowles for a 54-yard touchdown either side of a Jenks score.
That set the stage for the grand finale. With just two minutes left, Tomcheck barreled into the end zone for what would be the go-ahead touchdown in a wild 34-33 Southlake Carroll victory.

It was the Tomcheck and Knowles show for much of the night. Tomcheck threw for 322 yards and two scores and added another two touchdowns on the ground. Knowles was a thorn in the side for Jenks’ secondary all night, finishing with seven catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Easton Nied also had two big catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
It was quite the rally for a team that didn’t return a single starter on defense and also had a head coach in his first-ever game. Now they’ll look to carry that momentum into another major challenge Friday when they travel to face North Crowley at 7 p.m.”
