5A Team of the Week: Bryan Adams Cougars

The past three seasons, Bryan Adams has won just four total games.

They weren’t expected to add to that total in their season opener last Thursday. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football had the Cougars as a 12-point underdog against 6A Irving Nimitz. IHSS’ Matt Diggs even tabbed Nimitz to win by 28.

The Cougars had other ideas. They may have entered the fourth quarter trailing 35-28, but a 20-yard touchdown run by Bam Anderson and a six-yard touchdown run by Lowell Cumby proved decisive in a 42-35 victory. Cumby even added the cherry on top with the game-sealing interception.

For a program that hasn’t had a ton of experience closing out games down the stretch in recent times, Adams head coach Carl Robinson said he couldn’t be prouder of his players.

“We faced adversity throughout the game, but our young men stayed together, continued to believe in one another, and found a way to finish,” Robinson said. “Offensively, we made explosive plays and scored when we needed to. Defensively, we came up with important stops in critical moments. It was a total team victory.”

Cumby was the catalyst for the win, rushing for 130 yards and five touchdowns on 28 carries. Aaron Dixon also pitched in with 63 yards on 12 carries, while Nick Montgomery finished with 60 yards on just five carries.

Now Adams has a chance to do something it hasn’t done in five years: start a season 2-0. The Cougars will travel to Seagoville this Friday looking to build on an impressive season-opening victory. And after the struggles of recent seasons, they’ll hope last Thursday will be a turning point for this program.

“Opening the season with a 42–35 win over a talented 6A Irving Nimitz program is huge for Bryan Adams football. It gives our players confidence and shows that the work they put in throughout the offseason is paying off,” Robinson said. “At the same time, it is only one game. We are proud of the victory, but we still have plenty to correct and improve.”
