6A Team of the Week: Pebble Hills Spartans
Eastwood has clinched at least a share of three of the last four District 1-6A titles. Pebble Hills has finished top three in the district in each of the past five seasons.
So when these two get together, there’s likely to be a big impact on the district standings. Last Thursday was no different.
Both squads entered 4-1 and 1-0 in district play. And heading into the fourth quarter, Eastwood led 31-21 after 28 unanswered points.
But the Spartans weren’t done.
Pebble Hills quarterback Joe Fernandez connected with Ian Sublasky for a touchdown to cut Eastwood’s lead to three.
It would stay that way until there were just 90 seconds left. Fernandez got outside the pocket, found LJ Bailey, who shook free of a tackle and raced 51 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
“Our defense stepped up and played tough in the second half, while our offense answered the challenge when it mattered most. They ignored the scoreboard and continued to play,” Pebble Hills head coach Ryan Warner said. “I’m proud of the way our players stayed locked in and continued to fight until the last snap.”
Fernandez led the offense with 317 passing yards and four touchdowns. Bailey finished with 165 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Sublasky had 93 receiving yards and the other two receiving touchdowns.
Defensively, linebacker Andre Ponce racked up 13 tackles and an interception, while fellow linebacker Jose Ambriz was right behind him with 12 tackles.
With the 35-31 victory, Pebble Hills is now 5-1 and 2-0 in district play, and they know their latest victory could play a big role in the standings down the stretch.
“Eastwood is a solid team, and we knew it would take a complete effort in all phases of the game,” Warner said. “This was a key district win against a tough opponent.”
Next up, the Spartans have a big game against a 4-1 Eastlake team this Friday at 7:30.
