6A Team of the Week: Arlington Martin Warriors

Arlington Martin has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2004-05.

This year, the Warriors are determined to right the ship. After a 4-0 start, they had quite the test against an Aledo team that had not lost a district game in 19 years.

The Bearcats quickly showed why they’ve built that streak, jumping out to a 21-10 halftime lead, but Martin didn’t blink.

Kevin Grant, Javian Jones-Priest, and Kaden Phillips all had fourth quarter rushing touchdowns as the Warriors rallied past Aledo for a statement 35-21 victory. The victory snapped Aledo’s 136-game district win streak.

“What Aledo has built and the success they’ve been able to achieve, regardless of classification or districts, is unheard of,” Arlington Martin head coach Chad Rives said. ”  To be able to come out on top against a team like Aledo was important.  We need to be able to win big games against quality opponents.”

Martin quarterback Chase Devoll completed 21 of his 25 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. Malik Mason had nine catches for 70 yards and a score, while Chancellor Tealer also finished with 70 receiving yards.

Defensively, linebacker Daylan Howell was dominant with 17 tackles and three tackles for loss.

Martin is now 5-0 on the season. And as they look to get back to the standard established by the 18-straight playoff berths they had from 2006-2023, Rives knows the resilience they showed on Friday will be big.

“At halftime, there was no complaining, no blaming, and no excuses being made,” Rives said. “We talked about the adversity we were facing and what needed to be done to deal with it.  And then, we went out and executed.”

The Warriors will now get a week of rest as they hit the halfway point of their regular season. They’ll return to action after their bye on Oct. 9 against Arlington Sam Houston.
