6A Team of the Week: Pieper Warriors
It was a war of attrition for Pieper against Converse Judson last week. In the first half alone, the Warriors lost several key players to injury, including their starting quarterback.
Making matters worse, Judson jumped out to a 35-21 halftime advantage.
But when his number was called, backup quarterback Lucas Reid was ready. Reid threw for 250 yards coming off the bench, but with under two minutes to go, Pieper still trailed by seven.
Reid never wavered. He found Carson LaCombe in behind the Judson defense for a 38-yard touchdown to cut Judson’s lead to 42-41.
Pieper head coach Eddie Salas faced a big decision and decided to ride the hot hand. Reid stayed on the field for a two-point conversion and connected with LaCombe again for the final score in a gutsy 43-42 victory for the Warriors.
“Judson is an exceptional, well coached program with elite athletes, and they test you every step of the way in this tough district,” Salas said. “Beyond our usual halftime adjustments, we had guys stepping onto a varsity field for the very first time, and every single one of them embraced the moment. I couldn’t be prouder of how our players and coaches responded.”
LaCombe finished with six catches for 150 yards. In the rushing attack, senior running back Jack Trevino had five carries for 79 yards while Wade Springer racked up 66 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries.
The Pieper defense also delivered several big plays. Linebacker Laton Springer had two interceptions, while defensive backs Jayden Scott and Theo Abraham each had one apiece.
With the win, Pieper is now 2-1 in District 27-6A play and firmly in the playoff mix in third place. The Warriors will have no shortage of confidence now as they look to earn a playoff berth in their first-ever 6A season.
“This was, without a doubt, a complete team win,” Salas said. “A victory like this builds real character, and it’s going to pay dividends for our team all season long.”
