5A Team of the Week: Tomas Gators
Tomas had a chance to make history Friday night.
No Lamar Consolidated ISD team had ever qualified for the playoffs in its inaugural season, but the Gators had an opportunity to change that with an upset victory over Victoria West, a game where Dave Cambpell’s Texas Football had the Gators as a 11-point underdog.
The Gators evidently didn’t get the memo. In a wild shootout, the game eventually went to overtime tied at 48.
There was only one score in overtime and it came through the hands of Samuel Sisco, who caught a 25-yard touchdown to secure a 54-48 victory and a historic playoff berth for the Gators.
“What impressed me most was our players’ resolve under pressure and their toughness to finish,” Tomas head coach Kiah Johnson said. “They never gave up, kept believing in one another, and found a way to win in overtime. This is a young team, and we’re watching them grow up through moments like that.”
James “Bubba” Moses had a huge game with 102 rushing yards, 130 receiving yards, and four total touchdowns. Matthew Feacher was also just as productive with 102 rushing yards, 80 receiving yards and two total touchdowns.
Quarterback Brayden Rodriguez was the chief distributor with 246 passing yards and three touchdowns.
It was an offensive performance that capped off an impressive debut season for the Gators.
“Being playoff bound in our first varsity season is a tremendous accomplishment for our players, coaches, school, and community,” Johnson said. “These young men are building the foundation of Tomas football and learning what it takes to compete and win. I’m proud of how far they’ve come, and we’re excited for the opportunity to keep growing together.”
The Gators are now 4-5 on the season and 3-2 in district play. They’ll close out the regular season this Saturday with a big test on the road against Fort Bend Marshall.
