Katy reminded us why they are considered the cornerstone of TXHSFB

Katy erased Steele 38-0 on Saturday in route to their 4th consecutive State Championship appearance. I personally had Steele on the upset going in. I’ve covered a few of their games this season and from what I saw, they seemed like the team to beat. On the other hand, Katy simply reminded us why they are considered the cornerstone of Texas High school Football or even High school football in general.

It wasn’t even close. The first half consisted of stellar defense from both teams. It was apparent that Steele seemed limited offensively. Quarterback, Xavier Martin was still battling a previous ankle injury. His passes were a little off target, especially on crucial 3rd downs. He just couldn’t plant on his leg to put more velocity on his throws. The Knights were also missing their all-purpose back, Bryson Denley (Texas Tech Commit). No word on his injury but his absence was definitely felt in this game. The senior had accounted for over 1,100 yards and 17 touchdowns this season.

Things got ugly in the second half. Martin had to be benched, which ended up stalling Steele’s offense completely. Katy then began to open up some wounds, with methodical drives lead by senior All American running back, Kyle Porter. The Tigers also capitalizing on a fumble recovery for a touchdown that extended their lead 24-0. From there, it was just a slow death for Steele.

Katy’s defense was nothing short of impressive. They obviously had the size advantage over Steele, so they played that to their favor. The front four caused havoc all game, plugging up gaps and containing sweeps. Steele relies heavily on big plays to ignite their offense. Katy simply took that out of the equation, leaving nothing for Steele to do. This was Katy’s 10th shutout of the season. No team has scored more than 21 points on the Tigers all year.

Katy will play Lake Travis next Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Fans are itching for that elusive State Championship which seems more attainable this year, since Cedar Hill is no longer in the equation. A team that had ruined Katy’s title hopes the last two years. Although The Tigers are the favorites to win, I would not take Lake Travis lightly. They aren’t strangers to state championships either.
