The money game. Pay for flay. Whatever you want to call it, like FCS-level football teams all across the nation, Stephen F. Austin is no stranger to the early season non-conference blowout at the hands of Power Five wrecking balls.
Since 2008, SFA has played a single FBS team in each season with an 0-8 record and combined score of 432-73. That includes a relatively close 31-23 battle with SMU in 2008 (and a 52-0 loss to the same team three years later) as well as a 61-13 defeat in 2013 at the hands of the same program the Lumberjacks will face this fall – Texas Tech.
I’m not here to predict that SFA’s understandable losing streak to FBS football programs will end this year. Far from it. But – stay with me here – if it ever does, if the Lumberjacks ever defeat a football team from the Power Five, this could very well be the best chance to do it.
