1. Texas A&M’s running game this season will be built around one simple concept: getting defenders out of the box via perimeter passes so that the Aggies can run the ball between the tackles. The instrument of this concept will be package plays which incorporate the zone read with screens and downfield routes. The first option will be an inside zone handoff to the running back with the screens serving as something of an outside running game. In addition, you’ll have some outside zone/stretch plays and some power mixed in as well.
2. A&M quarterback Trevor Knight ran a lot of these plays at Oklahoma and such plays have become prevalent throughout college football. He’s going to have to make good decisions on the mesh reading the defensive end in order to jump start everything.
3. Nonetheless, A&M is still going to have to block people which they struggled with last season and in the spring. The good news for A&M fans is that the offensive line is bigger than last year’s and should be better at displacing people. The key is going to be blocking the right people and being able to get off of combination blocks and get to the second level against linebackers in which their inexperience could be a negative factor.
