- Then there was one.
Heading into Friday there were seven undefeated teams in the DII Bracket. One by one they fell off and the only one remaining in the semifinals was Kaufman. Kaufman would defeat Argyle 28-21 to advance to the final against Somerset.
Somerset took quite the route to the Final as they defeated 2013 and 2014 7on7 champions Graham, one of this year’s favorites to win in China Spring, 3A powerhouse Celina and Wharton.
Kaufman would finish their pursuit of perfection and finish the tournament unblemished as they defeated Somerset 32-27 and lay claim to the DII 2016 7on7 Champions.
- Redemption
The Consolation Bracket may not be the most glamourous or prestigious of competitions but it still gives teams a shot at walking out of the tournament with some type of reward.
Grace Community and Bay City would be the two teams duking it out with Grace Community prevailing with a 53-27 final score.
- Elite struggles
Texas high school football can usually depend on a few schools being contenders for state titles every year. Some teams have become the blueprint for success but sometimes those teams can slip through the cracks.
The Cedar Hill Longhorns, 2014’s 6A Division II Champions only came away with one victory in pool play on Friday. The team they defeated that year was Katy who also had one victory to their name and were last year’s 6A Division II Champions.
Both teams will now have to be on the consolation side of things which is a bit surprising based off the success of both these programs.
- DeSoto is dangerous
DeSoto finished pool play 3-0. It is not too hard to believe considering they have four players that have committed to the TCU, Colorado, Nevada, and Army programs among a plethora of talented athletes on that roster.
- People are excited for football
Even though its 7on7 fans and players are fully committed to the games at hand. Players jump for joy when the final horns are blown and parents can be heard cheering from the sidelines as each play unfolds like a major motion picture.
Coaches can be heard from opposite fields and the usual in-game discussions between coaches and referees can be delightful to watch.
One thing is for certain, here in Texas, people love their football and football season never ends.
