HOOVER, Ala. — It’s kinda hard to believe Texas A&M’s football program was such a mess just six months ago.
“You look at what’s happened, which is chemistry and a little bit of nondrama for the first time in a long time … that says a lot about the leadership in the locker room right now and says a lot about some decisions we made [starting] Dec. 31,” A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin said Tuesday at the Southeastern Conference Media Days.
Sumlin revamped his coaching staff after a season-ending 27-21 loss to Louisville in the Music City Bowl. He hired offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, offensive line coach Jim Turner and defensive tackles coach David Turner — all established veterans.
But Sumlin’s biggest change in bringing stability to the locker room was adding former Oklahoma starting quarterback Trevor Knight, who graduated early to play his senior season at A&M. The injury-prone Knight, who lost his starting job with the Sooners to Baker Mayfield, might not have an All-SEC season on the field in 2016, but he gave an All-American performance Tuesday with the cameras rolling.
