The Houston Cougars avenged their lone loss from last season. Playing their second Thursday night game in three weeks, and their fourth game in 20 days the Cougars knew they had something to prove against the UConn Huskies.

The teams were scoreless through one quarter, and in the second that’s when the Cougars got rolling, scoring 28 points before the half. Even in the post-BCS era style points matter; teams should beat inferior teams handily to show they are a dominant team.

The Cougars then put the final blow into the Huskies with two third quarter touchdowns to go up 42-7. The final would be 42-14 after a meaningless fourth quarter touchdown from UConn.

The next real test for the Cougars won’t be until their next Thursday night game when currently AP ranked #3 Louisville comes to town on November 17th, in what is surely Houston’s biggest game in recent memory. This game could decide if the Cougars get into the playoff.

Houston can’t overlook every team until then or they may end up falling to a team they shouldn’t. Louisville plays Clemson this week in Death Valley, and whether the Cardinals win or lose, it should be a top 10 matchup if both teams take care of business elsewhere.

With every win the Cougars collect their resume for joining a Power 5 conference looks better and better, and Tom Herman’s price tag goes up and up. If Houston does not make it into the Big 12 the Cougars may have to start a GoFundMe campaign to keep Herman around. With Les Miles already gone at LSU and Notre Dame struggling the who’s who of college football could come knocking on Herman’s door.

So with every win the Cougars come closer for a chance to play in the college football playoff, also makes the Tom Herman to any big time job opening rumors just a little bit louder.
