The Abilene Eagles made quick work of the Keller Indians on Thursday night, routing them by a score of 59-21. Payton Killam, Abilene’s quarterback, was particularly effective, throwing for four touchdowns on parent’s night.
The Eagles struck first with a field goal, then made quick work of a struggling Keller defense on the second drive. There was really no competition after that point, Keller was 1-7 and drops to 1-8 on the year, and Abilene has the opposite, improving to 8-1. The stats for Abilene were gaudy, but Keller had some very nice plays of their own, including an excellent 61 yard pass from Dillon Smith to Brady Marek to open the third quarter. There just weren’t enough plays to pull off the upset tonight as the Abilene defense swarmed ballcarriers all night long.
Abilene has improved immensely on both sides of the ball after a season opening blowout loss to San Angelo Central, and is looking to make some waves in a stacked Region 1. There will be a definite challenge for the Eagles as their small enrollment almost guarantees that they’ll go Division II, and will face some of the stronger teams in the area nearly right off the bat. A victory next week over Timber Creek next week locks Abilene in first place of their district, with a slightly easier slate. Keller will have to rebuild, regroup, and hope for better luck next year.
