Former San Antonio Reagan High School, and current Texas A&M Aggie quarterback, Trevor Knight’s regular season is done after being ruled out of the team’s final three games. Knight bowed out of last week’s loss at Mississippi State when he injured his shoulder. However, the Texas A&M season isn’t completely lost. This team is still very talented, and they’re turning the team over to an experienced backup.
Or, as singer and songwriter James Taylor put it, “I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain” and I’ve seen ball clubs rally around a new starter to finish their season strong. With three home games left on the Aggies schedule they should coast in to a 10-2 record.
Head coach Kevin Sumlin expressed that his team will is upset to see their starter go down, but will be fine with Georgetown High School graduate, Junior Jake Hubenak at the helm. Sumlin spoke with reporters after the loss saying, “Yeah, we’re disappointed, everybody is disappointed,” fifth-year coach Kevin Sumlin said. “But the message is, ‘What now? Hubenak was an under recruited quarterback out of high school. He had to walk on to Oklahoma State before heading to Binn College and then landing in College Station. He did lead Georgetown H.S. to the 2012 Class 4A Division I championship game, and was an All-Central Texas player that season.
When he was thrusted into the starting role last year, he played well against Louisville in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in a loss. His stat line saw him throw for two scores and 307 yards. He had a similar stat line last week when he took over for Knight; throwing for two scores and 222 yards on only 11 completions.
The final three opponents on their schedule are all at Kyle Field, and against two SEC West division opponents that are below the Aggies and a non-conference game against a Texas San Antonio squad that’s given up on average 26.6 points per game. Up first will be one of the worst defense in the SEC West, Ole Miss. The Rebels have allowed 174 points through five conference games and will be without their starting quarterback Chad Kelly after he torn his ACL.
So times may be bleak right now in The 12th Man land. As the fear of the unknown is something that’s very scary to consider. However, with the upcoming schedule, and the familiarity of Hubenak to the Sumlin offense, Aggie fans can take solace in knowing that their team will be fine and still poised for a great finish to their 2016 season.
