Editor’s note: We will not be doing rankings this week, as we feel like rankings are useless once the playoffs start. Our four full-time writers will be picking the closest matchups in each region from each division in each classification. Here are our picks for 5A Division 2.
Region 1
Canutillo – IIII
Abilene Cooper –
Advantage: Canutillo, 4 votes to 0
Reasoning: Canutillo is one of the best teams to come out of a very strong El Paso area. They’ll provide some serious problems for an Abilene Cooper defense that has struggled at points this year.
Region 2
Frisco Lone Star – II
Mesquite Poteet – II
Advantage: Push
Reasoning: Mesquite Poteet has the defensive clout to shut down Lone Star’s high flying offense, especially if star quarterback Jason Shelley is still injured.
Region 3
A&M Consolidated – I
Brenham – III
Advantage: Brenham, 3 votes to 1
Reasoning: A&M Consolidated has had their moments of brilliance, but so has Brenham. This was our closest 3-1 to a Push vote we had, but we still think that Brenham ultimately takes it.
Region 4
CC Calallen – IIII
Mercedes –
Advantage: CC Calallen, 4 votes to 0
Reasoning: Calallen is a great team that will eventually play a team that will inevitably upset it. Mercedes, while good, is not that team. Calallen boasts a powerful defense that should shut down the Tigers
