Hello, Texas Tech Defense
After the Red Raiders were embarrassed last week on defense, they stepped up when they needed to and put together a much better effort this week. Jordan Brooks was all over the field for the defense that gave up a lot of points but made several timely plays when they needed to, including forcing four turnovers. It’s been a rough year for that unit, but give them credit for playing well after an atrocious game last week against Iowa State.
Patrick Mahomes is the Truth
At one point in the first half, Mahomes had more touchdown passes than incompletions. He spent all afternoon picking apart the Baylor defense as he became the second quarterback to have 5,000 yards of offense in back-to-back years. He finished this game with 586 yards and six touchdowns. If this was his final game as a Red Raider, he certainly made it count.
Zach Smith is Pretty Good Too
Yes, I know Texas Tech’s defense is not good. But the true freshman did everything he could to keep the Bears in the game. He finished with 377 yards passing and three touchdowns. He should definitely be in the running to be the Bears starting quarterback next year.
Craziness
We expected this game to be a shootout and, well, it was. From the combined 1,301 yards of offense to the several instances of poor tackling, this game turned into a crazy mess. After Texas Tech ran out to a 34-7 lead, Baylor stormed back and made it a game. As explosive as Baylor’s offense is, the hole was too big for the Bears to climb out off.
The Road Ahead
With Baylor losing their fifth game in a row, it will be fascinating to see how the Bears perform in the season finale at West Virginia. How motivated will they come out to play? Also, give credit to Texas Tech for playing with pride after what happened last week in Ames. It’s been a rough season in Lubbock but the Red Raiders will enter the offseason with a positive taste in their mouths.
