Region I vs. Region II
Abilene Wylie– 4
Kennedale– 0
Advantage: Abilene Wylie
Reasoning: Abilene Wylie contained Nick Gerber and the high-powered Levelland offense in the regional championship. Meanwhile, Kennedale pulled out a big second-half comeback over Van thanks to a big game from sophomore running back D.J. Kirvan. Kennedale also has new Ohio State commit Baron Browning to anchor the defense. It all sets up to be a close game.
That said, Wylie’s defense has been very impressive in the playoffs and throughout the whole season. If you combine that with an offense averaging more than 44 points per game in the playoffs, it sounds like a winning combination to get to AT&T Stadium.
Region III vs. Region IV
Carthage– 1
China Spring– 3
Advantage: China Spring
Reasoning: In the regional championships, China Spring defeated archrival and defending state champion Waco La Vega to make it here. Carthage won a close game against Stafford that had a wild ending. Both teams enter with a lot of confidence knowing that they’re just one game away from playing for a state crown.
Ultimately, we like China Spring just a little bit more in this game. In a game that could come down to the final possession, look for China Spring’s defense to step up and get the win for the Cougars.
