J.T. Barrett will get to take home some individual hardware this season. Barrett and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley were both named winners of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, which is given to the best player in the Big Ten.

Barrett and Barkley both finished with the same number of first and second-place votes by Big Ten Coaches. Each coach cannot vote for their own player. It is the first time that two players have won the award since 2009.

Barrett finished the year third in the conference in total offense, averaging almost 273 yards per game and accounting or 33 touchdowns. He also had 125 yards rushing in the double overtime victory against Michigan. He finished second behind former Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon back in 2014.

This is the first time that the former Wichita Falls Rider quarterback has won the award. He is also the fourth Buckeye in the last six years to win the award, including now-Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott and Houston Texans wide receiver Braxton Miller. Miller is a two-time winner of the Silver Football.

Barrett will lead the Buckeyes into the College Football Playoff semifinals against Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
