Prior to the start of their games, the DeSoto band plays an ominous tune that fittingly sets the tone for the DeSoto Eagles and their opposition as they begin to take the field.

“Ready or not, you can’t run, you can’t hide,” is the opening line to a song released by the hip-group The Fugees that the DeSoto band performs that has appropriately come to define the DeSoto Eagles and how they have performed this season.

Whether you’ve come to terms with it or not, DeSoto has probably been the best team in Texas this year and come Saturday will have the opportunity to put a stamp to that claim. It will come as the most daunting task however because awaiting the team that has reached the state title game for the first time in its history is Cibolo Steele, who is hell bent on being the first and only team to defeat the almighty DeSoto Eagles.

It has been a tumultuous journey to get to the state title game for DeSoto as they had constantly run into the brick wall that was the Allen Eagles in years past. Now as they stand one of two teams playing in the 6A Division II State Final, DeSoto has the final step in front of them for their dream season.

DeSoto has given fans and themselves quite a scare the past few weeks as evidenced by their games with Abilene and Klein Collins, which both came down to some last minute heroics and good fortune as the door was almost shut on their season. 21 players on the Eagles have been offered scholarships but even with the amount of individual talent, the way this team has meshed together and developed a chemistry has been the main proponent in how this high-scoring team has been able to withstand any and all opponents.

Head coach Todd Peterman, who has been part of this program since 2008, has been in tight-knit games throughout the years and despite the individual prominence that has been produced from DeSoto, will surely look to finally hoist that elusive first title and capture something seems to have been a long time coming for Peterman and his program. Call it destiny, fate, or what you will, but if DeSoto wins this Saturday, history will be the be-all-end-all.
