The 2016-2017 bowl season rolled on Tuesday as two of the premiere “Group of Five” programs in Western Kentucky and Memphis squared off in the 2016 Boca Raton Bowl in FAU Stadium. The Hilltoppers used an explosive offense to defeat the Memphis Tigers by a score of 51-31.
Despite the geographical locations of the programs involved, a few players whose roots are embedded in Texas were put in the national spotlight.
Patrick Taylor, Jr. was one of the native Texans in action. He ended up as the leading rusher on the night for Memphis with his three carries for 34 yards with Memphis only producing 76 total team rushing yards. The former Atascocita Eagle also netted a reception for three yards.
Arlington High’s Daniel Montiel hauled in 34 yards on two receptions as he was one of eight players that had a reception on the night.
Among some of the other names from Texas that were on the roster for the teams included wide receivers Sean Dykes and Kedarian Jones, defensive back Christian Slaughter, offensive lineman Trevon Tate and defensive lineman Cortez Crosby all from the Memphis roster.
Kicker/punter Josh Cole was the lone Texan on the Western Kentucky roster.
