When a highlight run involving hurdling a tackler gains the attention of Dallas Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott, people tend to take notice.
This is the reality for Houston Lamar’s rising senior running back Ta’Zhawn Henry, who is not only gaining the attention of Elliott, but Division I coaches across the nation. According to 247 Sports, the Texans premiere back has already received offers from Houston, Baylor, and Oregon State to name a few. Listed as a three-star recruit, his profile is sure to grow exponentially in the coming months with a number of schools looking to join the sweepstakes for his signature.
Henry was Lamar’s leading rusher by over 1,000 yards, amassing 1,452 on the year in his 182 carries. Despite his 5-6 stature, one only needs to look at his recruiting reel that his size is not a disadvantage, but rather an advantage that highlights a very versatile skill set. Rushing yards were not the only asset Henry provided, as he accounted for over half of Lamar’s 30 rushing touchdowns with 16.
Many have seen a Lamar legend like Henry take his talents all the way to the NFL, in former Lamar Consolidated and texas high school football alumnus, Jacquizz Rodgers. As mentioned before, one can see a similar style of runner of Henry to Rodgers, who also stands at 5-6. Both possess the game breaking talent, and the ability to be an all-purpose back, regardless of the situation. It is no wonder Gary Andersen has his sights set on this young Texan’s talent, as he can continue the tradition of small superstar backs in Corvallis.
Reports earlier this year suggest that Henry is interested in staying in Texas, specifically locking down an offer for the Texas Longhorns, but also has a small interest in heading to Lubbock at Texas Tech. With out-of-state offers from Iowa State and Colorado already at his disposal, there is no definitive answer as to where Henry may land, but in Henry’s position, this is the ideal problem to have.
It will be interesting to see the remaining offers Henry receives as his 2017 campaign kicks off. Any team lucky enough to receive this versatile back is gaining a player that will turn heads for his play on the field, rather than his size.
