Thornton comes to Hico from Santo, where he lead the Wildcats to four playoff appearances in 10 years. Without his coaching chops, he’s still one of Texas High School football’s favorite sons – he won two state titles with the Stephenville Yellow Jackets in 1993 and 1994.
He isn’t stepping into a rough situation with Hico, this is a Tiger team that went 6-5 in 2016 before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Mart. The Tigers also went to the state semifinals as recently as 2013, and to the quarterfinals as recently as 2014. They have a couple solid kids returning for next year, which should help ease the transition, which is coming fairly late in the offseason.
